100 Book Challenge (Aug 2010 - Dec 2010):

The Hippie is working on a 100 Book Challenge this year with a goal of completing the first one by the end of 2010.  She's read a zillion books already in her short life, but we'll start here with recording each title.  She learned to read well in Kindergarten and LOVED it.  Sadly, though, at this point I can tell that my asking her to read seems like a chore.  I've created a list of books that gradually increase in difficulty and reading level, but are all (hopefully) enjoyable reads.  I'm hoping that as she progresses through the list, she will once again build that fluency, confidence and LOVE for reading.  As she reads each title, I will log it here.  Of course, these are always in addition to the books I read aloud to them.    THESE are just the "Reading" books that the Hippie reads ....

UPDATE:

The list at the bottom of this page is how I was able to rekindle my oldest daughter's love of reading.  As it says above, my daughter learned to read in kindergarten and took off, moving all the way to small chapter books very quickly.  Then, at some point it became a chore.  I made it a goal to find that love for reading in her again, so I set out to create a list of books for her to read in order of difficulty, slowly "climbing the ladder" so to speak, often mixing back in some of the shorter and easier ones just to keep it light and fun.  My only rule was that there was minimal if any "twaddle" ~ I wanted QUALITY literature.  Well, we started the 2010 school year on this challenge and by Christmas, she jumped from these books below to Laura Ingalls Wilder books and has taken off from there.  The list kind of got left behind, but I thought I'd leave it here as a guide if you, too, are trying to instill a love of reading in your child and want to gradually "up the anty" for them.  At this point, the girl is always reading and there is just no way that I could dream of keeping track of every little book she reads.  She reads at breakfast, on the toilet and everywhere in between (small, one sitting type story and non-fiction books).  I'll just try to keep track of her NOVELS from here on out ...
